When your barcode or scanner is not scanning you can follow the steps below to troubleshoot it.
First let's make sure the barcode scanner is working properly
For this you'll need a somewhere to type where your keyboard can enter text and and any item that is handy that has a UPC/Bar Code, the best source for verified barcodes is usually store bought product packaging you might have around.
- Open up a word document or a notepad text and place the cursor in the message so it's ready for you to type.
- Next verify you scanner is plugged in to the computer
- Scan the the barcode and see if it gets typed out in the document. The cursor should jump to the next line after the number is typed out
If nothing happens try scanning another barcode that you know to be good, possibly another format if possible. If there is no response try another USB port and if possible, another computer. If there is still no response the scanner may be defective or may need to be reprogrammed.

If you have determined that the barcode scanner is functioning properly, the most likely reason is that there is an issue with barcode on the student id that is allowing the barcode scanner to recognize the student id information contained in the barcode.
These are some of the most common failure points:
- The Student ID number on the id card does not match the student id provided by your school or district for that student.
- Some common examples are
- The student id card has a leading letter or zero
- The student id card number differs entirely from the Hero student id. This is common for schools that us student id cards to process financial transactions such as paying for supplies in the school store or library or dining in the lunchroom.
- Some common examples are
- The Student ID card barcode font is not correctly formatted
- Some common examples are
- Type 39 Barcode font not used.
- No Start/Stop Sentinel before and after the student id number ( i.e. *12345* )
- Barcode proportioning ( Height vs. Width)
- Quiet Zone Issue

Let's troubleshoot a Student ID Card
We are going to do the same thing we did earlier when we tested the functionality of the barcode scanner. This time instead of scanning a handy item with a barcode/upc we are going to scan a student id card.
- Open up a word document or a notepad text and place the cursor in the message so it's ready for you to type.
- Scan the the barcode and see if it gets typed out in the document.
- If successful, in Hero do the following:
- Hero Access-> Student lookup-> Search ->Student ID number that was typed into the document.
- If you get a No Student Found error. look the student up by name and verify that the student id in Hero matches the student id that was typed on the document.
Note: Please remember as previously discussed in the digital world the student id numbers must match exactly without discounting leading charters or zeros.
- If you get a No Student Found error. look the student up by name and verify that the student id in Hero matches the student id that was typed on the document.
- Hero Access-> Student lookup-> Search ->Student ID number that was typed into the document.
